Jayapal Statement on the Unlawful Abduction and Deportation of Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia
April 1, 2025

“Whether it is Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, Khalil Mahmoud, Alfredo Suarez, Lewelyn Dixon, Fabian Schmidt, Ranjani Srinivasan, or Rebecca Burke, the Trump administration is out of control with indiscriminate, and often illegal actions, in the name of so-called immigration enforcement. They have been disappearing people from their homes in the middle of the night, kidnapping people in the middle of the street, deporting individuals to prison camps, and flagrantly violating people’s human, civil, and due process rights."

Padilla, Schiff Urge Attorney General Bondi to Reverse Course on Unjustified Firings of Immigration Judges
March 31, 2025

"U.S. Senators Alex Padilla (D-Calif.), Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Immigration Subcommittee, and Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) joined 64 House and Senate Democrats in urging Attorney General Pam Bondi to reverse the Executive Office for Immigration Review’s (EOIR) alarming decision to fire immigration judges even as the immigration courts currently face a staggering backlog of immigration cases. In February, EOIR abruptly fired 20 immigration judges, removed all nine Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA) judges appointed during the Biden Administration, and terminated four individuals in senior EOIR leadership positions, with indications they may remove even more judges."

Rep. Jimmy Gomez Leads 35 Lawmakers in Demanding USCIS Reinstate Citizenship Grant Funding Amid Abrupt Freeze
March 7, 2025

Representative Jimmy Gomez (CA-34) is leading 35 of his colleagues in demanding answers from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) after the agency abruptly froze funding for the Citizenship and Assimilation (C&A) Grant Program, jeopardizing critical services that help lawful permanent residents become U.S. citizens. Since 2009, the C&A Grant Program, previously known as the Citizenship and Integration Grant Program, has funded organizations that assist immigrants with citizenship applications, English language instruction, and civics education. The freeze—ordered by a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) memorandum on January 28—has left grant recipients without resources and no clear timeline for reinstatement. A list of grant recipients impacted by the funding freeze is available—click HERE for FY23 recipients and HERE for FY24 recipients.

Ranking Members Raskin, Jayapal, McBath Press DOJ on Trump Administration’s Dangerous Diversion of Law Enforcement Officials
Feb. 4, 2025

“Previous Republican and Democratic administrations have rightly prioritized true public safety threats for apprehension and removal. Unfortunately, this administration has made it clear that it sees all immigrants as criminals and priorities for removal, making no distinction between an undocumented mother with no criminal record, and a convicted murderer. The mission of the Department of Justice (DOJ) is to keep the American people safe from a wide range of criminal threats. […] Diverting critical resources away from these efforts will endanger American lives by allowing criminals to roam free on our streets, increasing the risk of drug trafficking, and leaving us vulnerable to terrorist attacks,” wrote the Ranking Members."

Jayapal Statement on Day One Immigration Executive Orders by President Trump
Jan. 20, 2025

“Despite campaigning to lower costs for working families, address the housing crisis, tackle the extraordinary levels of economic inequality in this country, and tamp down on inflation, Trump’s day one executive orders do none of that. The Executive Orders that nominally ‘secure the border’ will only create more chaos and disorder at the Southern border and eliminate programs that were proven successful. Plans for sweeping bans on immigration will have major negative impacts on our economy, make it impossible to prioritize serious threats for enforcement, undermine safety and security, and stoke xenophobia to divide us."
