Rep. Gregory W. Meeks Urges Department of Homeland Security to Grant Temporary Protected Status to Jamaica After Hurricane Melissa
Nov. 6, 2025

“For Jamaicans living in America, TPS would provide them with the safety and stability needed following the horrific storm that devastated the island leaving families displaced and homes destroyed,” Rep. Granting TPS is not only an act of compassion but of solidarity – ensuring that those already here are not sent back into dangerous and unstable conditions.”

The Members wrote in the letter:

“Jamaica is currently confronting widespread devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa. The storm has left countless residents without homes, electricity, clean water, or access to medical care. Roads and vital infrastructure have been destroyed, communities are struggling to recover, and the Government of Jamaica faces immense challenges in restoring essential services. Tens of thousands have been displaced, and recovery is expected to take months – if not years. Under these conditions, it would be unsafe and inhumane to require Jamaican nationals currently residing in the United States to return home.”

The issue of a national language has been debated in Congress, and the legislative branch has not made such an establishment… The memo attempts to roll back decades of progress and weakens the legal framework to combat national origin discrimination by treating language access as an unnecessary privilege rather than a civil right."

Many fled to the United States out of fear of persecution by the Taliban or retaliation for such cooperation with the United States. It is unsafe for political targets of the Taliban to be forced to return against their will. TPS protections must be maintained for Afghan nationals in the United States,” the lawmakers concluded.

June 4, 2025

“We write with deep concern about the Department of Homeland Security’s termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Afghanistan, which is scheduled to take effect on July 14, 2025. This decision is devastating for resettled Afghan nationals in the United States who have fled widespread violence, economic instability, challenging humanitarian conditions, and human rights abuses in their home country. Many of these Afghans fearlessly served as strong allies to the United States military during the war in Afghanistan, and we cannot blatantly disregard their service,” the lawmakers began.

Rep. Watson Coleman, Beyer Introduce Legislation to Increase Safety of Interactions Between ICE Officers and the Public
May 1, 2025

“During the first 100 days of the second Trump Administration, the President has used Immigration and Customs Enforcement to establish an atmosphere of hostility and fear while obliterating due process rights for lawful residents of the United States,” said Rep. Watson Coleman. “ICE’s tactic of wearing normal street clothes to misrepresent themselves to the public while executing raids, patrolling, detaining, and arresting individuals is dangerous and should be ended for everyone’s safety”

"Like many Americans, I have been dismayed by the recent cases where unidentified, and often masked, ICE Agents have been documented picking people up off the street or from their homes,” said Rep. Beyer. “The lack of identification can create dangerous situations and contribute to a climate of fear. It undermines the public's trust in law enforcement and is reminiscent of police states. It should not be allowed."

Congressman Glenn Ivey Leads House Colleagues in Demanding Return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia
April 21, 2025

Today, Congressman Glenn Ivey (MD-04) sent a letter to President Donald Trump demanding the immediate return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who was wrongfully deported to El Salvador, to the United States, despite having been granted protection from deportation by a United States immigration court. Despite the Trump Administration admitting Mr. Abrego Garcia’s removal was a mistake and the Supreme Court ordering the facilitation of his return, the Trump Administration has indicated repeatedly it does not intend to comply with the Supreme Court’s order and bring Mr. Abrego Garcia back to the United States. Mr. Abrego Garcia is a Maryland resident, living in Maryland’s Fourth Congressional District with his U.S. citizen wife and family.

Ocasio-Cortez, Pressley, Warren, Markey, Lawmakers Demand Explanation for “Disturbing Arrest and Detention” of Tufts Student Rumeysa Ozturk
April 4, 2025

This week Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY-14) joined Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley (MA-07), Senators Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Edward J. Markey (D-MA), and over 30 lawmakers in writing to Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Acting Director for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Todd Lyons, demanding information about the arrest and detention of Tufts University student Rumeysa Ozturk and similar incidents across the country.

“The Administration should not summarily detain and deport legal residents of this country merely for expressing their political views. Absent compelling evidence justifying her detention and the revocation of her status, we call for Ozturk’s release and the restoration of her visa,” wrote the lawmakers.
