Reps. Chu, Meng, Vargas, and Colleagues Raise Alarm and Demand Answers on Trump Administration’s Language Access Roll Backs
Aug. 15, 2025

"In their letter to President Trump and Attorney General Pam Bondi, the Members write, “President Trump does not have the authority to declare English as the national language. The issue of a national language has been debated in Congress, and the legislative branch has not made such an establishment… The memo attempts to roll back decades of progress and weakens the legal framework to combat national origin discrimination by treating language access as an unnecessary privilege rather than a civil right."

Bonamici, Hayes, Leger Fernández Lead Letter to Protect Immigrant Access to Head Start
Aug. 12, 2025

“Excluding some immigrant children from early education may create greater costs over time,” the Representatives wrote. “Children who enter kindergarten without access to preschool are more likely to need additional support in foundational areas such as literacy, social skills, and basic health care; services that are often addressed in Head Start through early learning and screenings. Keeping immigrant children from participating in Head Start programs would not address the long waitlists nor alleviate limited program availability.”

Brownley, Democratic Women’s Caucus Urge ICE to Require Clear Agent Identification, Crack Down on Dangerous Impersonators Targeting Women
Aug. 11, 2025

“All our lives, we are taught to fear masked men in unmarked vehicles. We learn we should run from such men to avoid being kidnapped, sexually assaulted, or killed. Yet, ICE is increasingly conducting raids and arrests in masks, plain-clothes, without visible identification or badges, using unmarked vehicles – tactics that cause confusion, terror, and mistrust among the public. These tactics invited perpetrators of violence against women to take advantage of the chaos by impersonating masked ICE agents in order to target and sexually assault women,” the members wrote.

Sherman, Chu, Gomez & Waters: DHS and ICE “Sanitized” Oversight Tour — Lawmakers Leave with More Questions Than Answers
Aug. 11, 2025

“Oversight isn’t optional—it’s our duty,” said Congressman Brad Sherman. “Our communities deserve transparency from federal agencies operating in our neighborhoods with such aggressive tactics. But when answers aren’t freely given, we must dig deeper. Today’s oversight visit sent a clear message: We will not allow abuse or neglect to go unchecked.”

“Just a month ago, I was illegally denied entry to this detention facility in downtown Los Angeles. Today, we finally got inside, but what we saw was deeply disturbing. We were barred from speaking with detainees and continue to receive conflicting reports about conditions, from the food and hygiene provided to the alarming lack of clarity over who is authorized to detain people off the streets. We will not stop pressing for answers and accountability until we know the full truth,” said Rep. Judy Chu.

“Only after giving DHS a 14-day notice were my colleagues and I allowed inside the DTLA detention center today to conduct oversight,” said Congressman Jimmy Gomez. “This summer, the facility was reported to be holding more than 300 people a day. Today, there were just 2. ICE and DHS are hiding the truth and blocking real oversight. Our communities deserve answers, unannounced access, and true accountability.”

Chair Grace Meng, Rep. Dave Min, and CAPAC Members Demand Answers into ICE’s Treatment of Asian Immigrants
Aug. 8, 2025

“These cases suggest potential violations of constitutional protections. The U.S. Constitution provides important due process protections to all persons within the United States, regardless of immigration status. For example, the Fifth Amendment guarantees due process protections against actions taken by the federal government, while the Sixth Amendment ensures the right to legal counsel in criminal prosecutions. The U.S. Supreme Court has repeatedly affirmed that LPRs are entitled to these same protections,” wrote the lawmakers.

Goldman, Warren, Padilla, Kelly and Correa Demand Investigations into ICE's Detention of U.S. Citizens
Aug. 8, 2025

“ICE policy makes clear that, “[a]s a matter of law, ICE cannot assert its civil immigration enforcement authority to arrest and/or detain a U.S. citizen. However, in recent high-profile cases, ICE has erroneously arrested U.S. citizens, at times appearing to use violent physical force. ICE has also reportedly detained citizens in immigration detention facilities, sometimes for over a week. ICE has even deported U.S. citizens: in multiple cases, ICE has deported U.S. citizen children along with their undocumented parents, reportedly against the families’ wishes,” the Members wrote.

Brownley, Chu Lead Call for Oversight and Accountability for Mistreatment of Individuals with Disabilities in ICE Custody
Aug. 5, 2025

“Reports of ICE and its contractors failing to provide necessary accommodations, neglecting medical needs, and violating disability rights laws are deeply alarming,” wrote the lawmakers. “It is unacceptable that detainees with disabilities are routinely denied access to medications, assistive devices, and means of communication until emergencies arise. This pattern of neglect demands immediate federal oversight, accountability, and enforcement of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and DHS’s own regulations.”

July 30, 2025

Congressional Delegation Demands USPS Refocus on Drug Interdiction, Protection of Children, Theft Prevention, and Other Core Duties
July 18, 2025

“As supporters of drug interdiction, anti-theft measures, and the protection of children, we are deeply concerned over reports that USPIS is being diverted away from those core missions to work on Department of Homeland Security (DHS) priorities. According to those reports, inspectors are spending time assisting DHS with painstaking review of individual letters and packages to locate individual immigrants targeted by DHS. That new task comes only a year after the Government Accountability Office (GAO) specifically recommended that USPIS continue its “increasingly important” efforts to align its resources with current mail security needs—not external priorities."

Rep. Dan Goldman Demands Transparency Around Immigration Proceedings for Unaccompanied Minors
June 23, 2025

"Congressman Dan Goldman (NY-10) led 77 of his colleagues in sending a bipartisan letter to the House Appropriations Subcommittee to direct the Department of Justice’s Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR) to submit a report to Congress detailing the status of unaccompanied children’s immigration proceedings. The letter also asks the Committee to include language in its FY2026 report encouraging EOIR to continue using specialized juvenile dockets to improve fairness, efficiency, and child protection in immigration court proceedings.

“The immigration courts have a critical role to play in administering justice efficiently while maintaining standards that ensure due process, which can be especially difficult in proceedings where children are the sole or principal respondent.  Utilization of specialized juvenile dockets with robust anti-trafficking safeguards and child-appropriate accommodations can both help protect children from dangers and achieve much needed efficiency benefits for the backlogged immigration courts, all while improving due process in children’s cases,” the Members wrote."

Rep. Judy Chu Fights for Immigrant Rights Amid Escalating ICE Raids
June 19, 2025

“These raids aren’t targeting criminals, they’re indiscriminately targeting workplaces, community institutions, and family homes,” said Rep. I will not stop fighting for our immigrant communities and their right to due process.”

Alongside Representatives Judy Chu (CA-28), Linda Sánchez (CA-38), Mark Takano (CA-39), and Luz Rivas (CA-29), she demanded answers following reports of inhumane conditions, due process violations, and alarming allegations that U.S. citizens may have been wrongfully detained."

Rep. Cisneros and Vice Chair Lieu Bash Marine Detention, Demand Answers
June 17, 2025

Today, Rep. Gil Cisneros (CA-31) and House Democratic Caucus Vice Chair Ted W. Lieu (CA- 36) led 34 House Democrats to condemn the reports that U.S. Marines detained a U.S. citizen and veteran last Saturday.

“As Members of Congress, we take an oath to defend the Constitution — the same oath that you and every service member has taken…” the letter reads. “The use of our military service members in this situation, who have sacrificed so much to defend our country, is sickening and disrespectful. The Constitutional rights to free speech and peaceful assembly are hallmarks of our democracy. We must be united in protecting these rights.”

Reps. Cisneros, Chu, and Tran Demand Answers from Homeland Security and ICE After Being Illegally Denied Entry to Adelanto Detention Facility
June 13, 2025

"Rep. Gil Cisneros (CA-31), Judy Chu (CA-28), and Rep. Derek Tran (CA-45) sent a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons condemning the agencies for unlawfully blocking their legally authorized oversight visit to the Adelanto ICE Processing Center in San Bernardino County, California. On June 8, 2025, the Members attempted to conduct an inspection of the facility in response to a wave of immigration raids across Los Angeles County. Despite federal law guaranteeing Members of Congress unfettered access to DHS facilities for oversight purposes, the delegation was denied entry, even after waiting outside for nearly two hours.

“This past weekend, I joined Reps. Chu and Tran to conduct Congressional oversight at the Adelanto ICE Detention Center, but instead we were met with locks on the gate, no answer to our calls, and denied entry,” said Rep. Cisneros. “We have a responsibility to ensure ICE is abiding by the law, but they refused to even let us in. We will not stop pressing for answers.”

Rep. Gomez, Sen. Schiff, Rep. Barragán Lead Bicameral Effort Demanding President Trump Withdraw National Guard and Marines from LA
June 10, 2025

"Representatives Jimmy Gomez (CA-34), Senator Adam Schiff (D-CA), Representative Nanette Barragán (CA-44), and 39 other California Delegation Representatives are demanding President Doanld Trump immediately withdraw the National Guard and U.S. Marines from Los Angeles, California. In a bicameral letter sent today, the lawmakers condemn the deployments as an unlawful overreach that bypassed state and local authority and urge the immediate withdrawal of the National Guard and Marines.

“We are writing to express grave concern regarding the deployment of the National Guard and the activation of 700 Marines to Los Angeles. These actions were taken without the consent of California Governor Gavin Newsom and over the objections of local law enforcement. It constitutes a clear violation of constitutional principles and law, and a grave overreach of executive authority,” wrote the lawmakers.

Rep. Chu Speaks Out Against Violent Los Angeles ICE Raids and Demands Release of Union President David Huerta
June 7, 2025

“I am outraged at the ICE raids in downtown Los Angeles that not only targeted immigrant workers and spread fear throughout our community, but also attempted to silence those who dare to speak out against the Trump Administration’s cruel and unlawful immigration agenda.”

“It is clear that SEIU President David Huerta was exercising his right to observe law enforcement activity and stand with community in peaceful protest to these raids. I stand with David and with immigrant communities across this country, and demand his immediate release along with the release of those detained in the raids. I will not allow this administration to tear apart families and terrorize neighborhoods. Immigrants strengthen our nation and every person in this country has a right to due process. We need answers. We need accountability. And we need to put an end to Donald Trump’s inhumane and disgusting attacks on immigrant communities.”

Cortez Masto, Colleagues Press Administration for Answers on Cancellation of Protected Status for Afghans Living in U.S.
June 4, 2025

“We write with deep concern about the Department of Homeland Security’s termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Afghanistan, which is scheduled to take effect on July 14, 2025. This decision is devastating for resettled Afghan nationals in the United States who have fled widespread violence, economic instability, challenging humanitarian conditions, and human rights abuses in their home country. Many of these Afghans fearlessly served as strong allies to the United States military during the war in Afghanistan, and we cannot blatantly disregard their service,” the lawmakers began.

Congressman Glenn Ivey Leads House Colleagues in Demanding Return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia
April 21, 2025

Today, Congressman Glenn Ivey (MD-04) sent a letter to President Donald Trump demanding the immediate return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who was wrongfully deported to El Salvador, to the United States, despite having been granted protection from deportation by a United States immigration court. Despite the Trump Administration admitting Mr. Abrego Garcia’s removal was a mistake and the Supreme Court ordering the facilitation of his return, the Trump Administration has indicated repeatedly it does not intend to comply with the Supreme Court’s order and bring Mr. Abrego Garcia back to the United States. Mr. Abrego Garcia is a Maryland resident, living in Maryland’s Fourth Congressional District with his U.S. citizen wife and family.

At least three deaths have occurred in ICE custody and several detained men and women and their families have alleged serious abuses. Immigration advocates have called it an ‘international human rights disaster.’ One detainee labeled Krome ‘a concentration camp.’”

As Trump Administration Prepares Revamped Muslim Ban, Rep. Chu, Sen. Coons Reintroduce Bill to Prevent Presidents from Enacting Religious Travel Bans
Feb. 5, 2025

"Rep. Judy Chu (CA-28) and Sen. Chris Coons (DE) reintroduced the National Origin-Based Antidiscrimination for Nonimmigrants (NO BAN) Act, which would prevent future bans by the Trump administration on people of Islamic faith, or any other religious group, by strengthening the Immigration and Nationality Act to prohibit discrimination based on religion. The bill would also require that any suspension of entry into the United States be narrowly tailored, backed by credible evidence, and subject to appropriate consultation with Congress. In the House, the bill is co-led by Reps. Nadler (NY-12), Don Beyer (VA-08), Ilhan Omar (MN-05), André Carson (IN-07), and Rashida Tlaib (MI-12)."

Rep. Chu Statement on President Trump’s Executive Order to Repeal Birthright Citizenship
Jan. 21, 2025

“The President’s executive order seeking to end birthright citizenship is yet another attempt to place himself and his Administration above the law. But no executive order can supersede the United States Constitution, and birthright citizenship is enshrined in the 14th Amendment of our Constitution with no room for interpretation. This is a foundational principle of our country, that anyone can be an American – regardless of their national origin or the national origin of their parents. President Trump’s executive order does not change the Constitution, and so he cannot revoke birthright citizenship."

Aug. 7, 2024

"Today, Rep. Judy Chu (CA-28) and Sen. Chris Coons (DE) led a bicameral partnership of their Democratic colleagues to introduce H.R. 9244,  the National Origin-Based Antidiscrimination for Nonimmigrants (NO BAN) Act—legislation that will prevent future Muslim bans.
