Democrats Use District Work Period to Conduct Oversight of ICE Detention Centers
June 3, 2025

"U.S. Representatives Maxine Dexter, M.D. (OR-03), Pramila Jayapal (WA-07), Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Immigration, Integrity, Security, and Enforcement, Adriano Espaillat (NY-13), Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, Nydia Velázquez (NY-07), Sylvia Garcia (TX-29), Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-25), Emily Randall (WA-06), Yassamin Ansari (AZ-03), Mark Pocan (WI-02), and Gwen Moore (WI-04) used the recent district work period to conduct oversight of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities, a critical duty of Members of Congress. These visits come after officials attempted to block Representatives LaMonica McIver (NJ-10), Bonnie Watson Coleman (NJ-12), and Rob Menendez (NJ-08) from conducting oversight at the Delaney Hall Detention Facility.

“The Northwest Detention Center is harboring some of the most heartbreaking stories in our region. Trump claims he’s going after criminals but the reality is he's going after moms, union leaders, green-card holders. He’s detaining our neighbors, our coworkers, and our loved ones—without guaranteed due process or any accountability," said Congresswoman Dexter. “On my visit, the discrepancy between what ICE told us and what we heard from those detained was damning. There is zero clarity on who is being detained and their quality of life. From mealtimes to access to fresh air, from medical care to reporting assault—nothing aligned. Let’s be clear: this system is not designed to keep anyone safe. It is designed to break spirits, strip rights, and disappear people from our communities—all funded by your tax dollars. I will not back down from this fight.”

May 29, 2025

"Today, U.S. Senators Alex Padilla, Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Immigration Subcommittee, and Adam Schiff (both D-Calif.) joined Representative Luz Rivas (D-Calif.-29), Representative Sydney Kamlager-Dove (D-Calif.-37), and 34 other lawmakers in urging Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to reconsider the termination of the legal status of a four-year-old Bakersfield girl and her family, potentially leading to life-threatening deportation. The young girl, identified by her initials as S.G.V., has short bowel syndrome and could die within days if she is deported and loses essential medical care at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles."

Reps. Robert Garcia, Maxwell Frost, Yassamin Ansari, Maxine Dexter Arrive in El Salvador to Demand Trump Administration Abide by Supreme Court Ruling, Release Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia
April 21, 2025

“While Donald Trump continues to defy the Supreme Court, Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia is being held illegally in El Salvador after being wrongfully deported,” said Congressman Robert Garcia. “That is why we’re here– to remind the American people that kidnapping immigrants and deporting them without due process is not how we do things in America. We are demanding the Trump Administration abide by the Supreme Court decision and give Kilmar and the other migrants mistakenly sent to El Salvador due process in the United States.”

Congressman Glenn Ivey Leads House Colleagues in Demanding Return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia
April 21, 2025

Today, Congressman Glenn Ivey (MD-04) sent a letter to President Donald Trump demanding the immediate return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who was wrongfully deported to El Salvador, to the United States, despite having been granted protection from deportation by a United States immigration court. Despite the Trump Administration admitting Mr. Abrego Garcia’s removal was a mistake and the Supreme Court ordering the facilitation of his return, the Trump Administration has indicated repeatedly it does not intend to comply with the Supreme Court’s order and bring Mr. Abrego Garcia back to the United States. Mr. Abrego Garcia is a Maryland resident, living in Maryland’s Fourth Congressional District with his U.S. citizen wife and family.

Menendez Leads 48 House Democrats in Denouncing Trump Administration’s Weaponization of HUD Programs to Target Immigrant, Mixed-Status Families
April 17, 2025

"The Trump Administration has proven once again that they will stop at nothing to inflict fear upon our immigrant neighbors and their loved ones,” said Congressman Rob Menendez. “These new HUD policies do nothing to address our national housing crisis. Instead, they will worsen housing instability for some of our most vulnerable community members and diminish families’ access to safe, healthy, and affordable homes. My colleagues and I are demanding that Secretary Turner reverse course and avoid this unnecessary harm."

Dexter: “Portland won’t be bullied into betraying our values”
Feb. 7, 2025

Today, Congresswoman Maxine Dexter, M.D. (OR-03) released the following statement on Portland joining a coalition of other sanctuary cities suing the Trump administration for his unlawful effort to deny our communities federal funding.

"Portland won’t be bullied into betraying our values. Trump’s effort to starve sanctuary cities of funding is just another disgusting, chaos-generating attack on our community.

“We are taking this fight straight to his doorstep. I applaud Mayor Keith Wilson and the City of Portland for making clear that we will not be intimidated, and we will not back down."
