Gomez Pushes to Block Illegal Use of IRS Data to Target Immigrant Families

Representative Jimmy Gomez (CA-34), a member of the House Ways and Means Committee, joined Reps. "Together with Senators Cory Booker and Andy Kim and Representatives Josh Gottheimer (NJ-05), Frank Pallone Jr.(NJ-06), and Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11), the Representatives led a letter to Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem and Acting Director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (“ICE”) Caleb Vitello demanding answers related to reported plans for the expansion of private immigration detention in New Jersey. The inquiries include questions related to the possible expansion of the Elizabeth Detention Center (“EDC”) and efforts to secure a contract with ICE for a 600-bed facility in the Newark Area."

On Thursday, January 23, 2025, agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (“ICE”) conducted a raid on a local business in Newark, New Jersey.  

In response, Rep. Rob Menendez (NJ-08) and Rep. LaMonica McIver (NJ-10) led a letter with Reps. Frank Pallone, Jr. (NJ-06), Nellie Pou (NJ-09), and Bonnie Watson Coleman (NJ-12) to the Department of Homeland Security demanding answers as to the circumstances surrounding the raid and the wellbeing of those involved.

The legislation authorizes the Family Reunification Task Force to continue its work to reunite the thousands of families torn apart by Trump’s Zero Tolerance policy that inhumanely separated children from their parents."
