McIver Files Appeal Notice in ICE Oversight Case, Says She’s Not Backing Down
Dec. 29, 2025

“From the beginning, I’ve fought back against this administration’s cruelty and attempts to silence dissent—this appeal is the next step in the fight. The Trump administration’s case is dangerous, baseless, and designed to stop me from doing my job. I won’t,” said McIver. “This appeal is for everyone who is standing up to this administration as they try to operate without oversight, silence the people who oppose them, and shut down those who protect the vulnerable. They want to make an example out of me, but I will not let them. I will not be bullied out of doing my job and protecting our communities. Not now, not ever.”

127 Members of Congress Urge DHS to Withdraw Harmful Public Charge Proposal
Dec. 23, 2025

“The proposed public charge rule will lead to mass uncertainty, disparate and arbitrary outcomes for individuals applying for permanent status or admission into our country, and undue harm to U.S. citizens,” wrote the members, led by Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus Chair Grace Meng, Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Chair Adriano Espaillat, Democratic Women’s Caucus Chair Teresa Leger Fernández, Congressional Black Caucus Chair Yvette Clarke, and CHC Vice Chair of Policy Rep. Menendez, McIver, and Clarke Conduct Oversight Visit at Delaney Hall
Dec. 23, 2025

“What we saw inside Delaney Hall is the betrayal of the American Dream,” said Congressman Menendez. “These are people who believe in the promise of this country and are being ripped from our communities and held there on the American taxpayer’s dime. All while the GEO Group is making an enormous profit and providing substandard care. We will not let this stand and we will continue to work to hold this Administration and those who benefit from tearing communities apart accountable."

“I have a responsibility to serve the people and protect the people of the 10th Congressional District, and that is why I had to put aside my experience here and come back to represent them–to see what is happening inside of Delaney Hall. These are the things we’re hearing: people who have not had a court date in months, people who are waiting on loved ones who cannot visit them, and people who are not getting proper medical care. It is awful, and this detention center needs to be shut down. That's why we're here. We're going to continue to show up, continue to have oversight, and continue to do our jobs,” said Congresswoman McIver. “When we left, a detainee told us this is not the America that we dreamed of. They thought they would be able to come here and have a better life.”

“No human being deserves to suffer the conditions we witnessed behind the walls of Delaney Hall, today. What our tour made overwhelmingly clear is that Jean Wilson Brutus’ death is a symptom of a larger culture of inhumanity that is inherent to for-profit detention centers like Delaney Hall. Nearly a thousand of our neighbors, our coworkers, our friends, and our loved ones are confined to this facility indefinitely, where they are treated every day as though they are less than human. Across the nation, many thousands more are facing the exact same circumstances,” said Congresswoman Clarke. “Being undocumented should not be a life sentence, and under no circumstance should it be a death sentence. Tragically, every passing week under this administration’s control creates more victims like Jean Wilson Brutus. That sin will stain America for all time, and all those who are responsible for it must and will be held accountable.”

CLARKE LEADS PUBLIC COMMENT LETTER TO DHS URGING AGAINST PROPOSAL THAT EXPANDS USE OF BIOMETRIC DATA COLLECTION IN IMMIGRATION AND NATURALIZATION PROCESSES
Dec. 19, 2025

“Recent public reporting, including an NPR investigation, has highlighted DHS’s increasing reliance on facial recognition and third-party data systems with limited transparency or oversight. These findings underscore broader concerns about algorithmic bias, disproportionate impacts on communities of color and immigrants, and the dangers of expanding surveillance infrastructure without clear guardrails. Recent high-profile breaches of biometrics systems, including the breach of a biometrics database for a company used by the U.K. Metropolitan Police and the unauthorized access of U.S. Customs and Border Protection data used for a facial recognition pilot program highlight the threat posed by broad biometrics collection without strong civil rights, privacy, and cybersecurity protections. The proposed rule provides no meaningful detail on how DHS will secure, limit, or oversee the new and expansive datasets it would create. It lacks information on cybersecurity protections, retention limits, access controls, independent auditing, or transparency mechanisms. Without such safeguards, the rule risks eroding public trust in immigration systems and undermining civil-rights protections that are essential to fair and humane governance.” The Members continued, “Biometric technologies hold significant implications for privacy, equality, and public trust. DHS must adopt a framework that protects individuals – not one that exposes millions of U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, and immigrant families to unnecessary and unmitigated risk.”

Seventy-Five House Members Sound the Alarm on the Negative Impact of ICE Raids on K-12 Students
Nov. 25, 2025

“Since January, we have seen unprecedented immigration enforcement actions to effectuate President Trump’s stated goal of creating the country’s largest deportation operation. We are deeply concerned about how these actions are impacting K-12 students, their families, and their communities,” said the Members. “The chaotic manner in which raids and apprehensions are being carried out is injecting needless trauma into these communities, which then makes its way into schools and contributes to absenteeism.”

Rep. Gregory W. Meeks Urges Department of Homeland Security to Grant Temporary Protected Status to Jamaica After Hurricane Melissa
Nov. 6, 2025

“For Jamaicans living in America, TPS would provide them with the safety and stability needed following the horrific storm that devastated the island leaving families displaced and homes destroyed,” Rep. Meeks said. “Now is the time for the United States to stand with Jamaica. Granting TPS is not only an act of compassion but of solidarity – ensuring that those already here are not sent back into dangerous and unstable conditions.”

The Members wrote in the letter:

“Jamaica is currently confronting widespread devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa. The storm has left countless residents without homes, electricity, clean water, or access to medical care. Roads and vital infrastructure have been destroyed, communities are struggling to recover, and the Government of Jamaica faces immense challenges in restoring essential services. Tens of thousands have been displaced, and recovery is expected to take months – if not years. Under these conditions, it would be unsafe and inhumane to require Jamaican nationals currently residing in the United States to return home.”

Bonamici, Hayes, Leger Fernández Lead Letter to Protect Immigrant Access to Head Start
Aug. 12, 2025

“Excluding some immigrant children from early education may create greater costs over time,” the Representatives wrote. “Children who enter kindergarten without access to preschool are more likely to need additional support in foundational areas such as literacy, social skills, and basic health care; services that are often addressed in Head Start through early learning and screenings. Keeping immigrant children from participating in Head Start programs would not address the long waitlists nor alleviate limited program availability.”

Brownley, Democratic Women’s Caucus Urge ICE to Require Clear Agent Identification, Crack Down on Dangerous Impersonators Targeting Women
Aug. 11, 2025

“All our lives, we are taught to fear masked men in unmarked vehicles. We learn we should run from such men to avoid being kidnapped, sexually assaulted, or killed. Yet, ICE is increasingly conducting raids and arrests in masks, plain-clothes, without visible identification or badges, using unmarked vehicles – tactics that cause confusion, terror, and mistrust among the public. These tactics invited perpetrators of violence against women to take advantage of the chaos by impersonating masked ICE agents in order to target and sexually assault women,” the members wrote.

Aug. 5, 2025

“Reports of ICE and its contractors failing to provide necessary accommodations, neglecting medical needs, and violating disability rights laws are deeply alarming,” wrote the lawmakers. “It is unacceptable that detainees with disabilities are routinely denied access to medications, assistive devices, and means of communication until emergencies arise. This pattern of neglect demands immediate federal oversight, accountability, and enforcement of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and DHS’s own regulations.”

Booker, Conaway, New Jersey Congressional Democrats Condemn Defense Secretary Hegseth’s Decision to Detain Undocumented Immigrants at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst
July 18, 2025

“We condemn in the strongest possible terms the decision by the Trump Administration to use Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst as an immigrant detention center. This is an inappropriate use of our national defense system and military resources. Escalating a radical immigration policy that has resulted in the inhumane treatment of undocumented immigrants and unlawful deportation of U.S. citizens, including children, across the country."

Congressional Delegation Demands USPS Refocus on Drug Interdiction, Protection of Children, Theft Prevention, and Other Core Duties
July 18, 2025

“As supporters of drug interdiction, anti-theft measures, and the protection of children, we are deeply concerned over reports that USPIS is being diverted away from those core missions to work on Department of Homeland Security (DHS) priorities. According to those reports, inspectors are spending time assisting DHS with painstaking review of individual letters and packages to locate individual immigrants targeted by DHS. That new task comes only a year after the Government Accountability Office (GAO) specifically recommended that USPIS continue its “increasingly important” efforts to align its resources with current mail security needs—not external priorities."

Rep. Dan Goldman Demands Transparency Around Immigration Proceedings for Unaccompanied Minors
June 23, 2025

"Congressman Dan Goldman (NY-10) led 77 of his colleagues in sending a bipartisan letter to the House Appropriations Subcommittee to direct the Department of Justice’s Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR) to submit a report to Congress detailing the status of unaccompanied children’s immigration proceedings. The letter also asks the Committee to include language in its FY2026 report encouraging EOIR to continue using specialized juvenile dockets to improve fairness, efficiency, and child protection in immigration court proceedings.

“The immigration courts have a critical role to play in administering justice efficiently while maintaining standards that ensure due process, which can be especially difficult in proceedings where children are the sole or principal respondent.  Utilization of specialized juvenile dockets with robust anti-trafficking safeguards and child-appropriate accommodations can both help protect children from dangers and achieve much needed efficiency benefits for the backlogged immigration courts, all while improving due process in children’s cases,” the Members wrote."

Congressman Glenn Ivey Leads House Colleagues in Demanding Return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia
April 21, 2025

Today, Congressman Glenn Ivey (MD-04) sent a letter to President Donald Trump demanding the immediate return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who was wrongfully deported to El Salvador, to the United States, despite having been granted protection from deportation by a United States immigration court. Despite the Trump Administration admitting Mr. Abrego Garcia’s removal was a mistake and the Supreme Court ordering the facilitation of his return, the Trump Administration has indicated repeatedly it does not intend to comply with the Supreme Court’s order and bring Mr. Abrego Garcia back to the United States. Mr. Abrego Garcia is a Maryland resident, living in Maryland’s Fourth Congressional District with his U.S. citizen wife and family.

April 17, 2025

"The Trump Administration has proven once again that they will stop at nothing to inflict fear upon our immigrant neighbors and their loved ones,” said Congressman Rob Menendez. “These new HUD policies do nothing to address our national housing crisis. Instead, they will worsen housing instability for some of our most vulnerable community members and diminish families’ access to safe, healthy, and affordable homes.
