NEWS: Schiff, Padilla, 40+ Lawmakers Sound Alarm on How Trump’s Immigration Agenda is Hurting Workers and Families’ Child Care Access, Raising Costs
Feb. 18, 2026

“Immigration enforcement against child care workers not only impacts the child care sector but also risks second-order effects for American families’ employment. When child care is disrupted, many parents must cut work hours or leave the workforce altogether to care for children. One study estimated that, from February to July 2025 alone, the “doubling of ICE arrests led to about 77,000 fewer employed U.S.-born mothers.” Already, child care is one of the most burdensome expenses for American families. Nationwide, families spend an average of more than $13,000 each year on child care, and up to almost $30,000 in some states. And even when families can afford child care, these services are in short supply; more than half of parents report waiting months for available slots. Rather than making child care more affordable, President Trump has done the opposite by withholding billions of dollars in federal funding from child care providers, and rescinding protections meant to ensure that child care providers can stay afloat. Now, this Administration’s immigration agenda will exacerbate the child care crisis for American families, worsening child care workforce shortages, increasing child care prices, and driving Americans out of the workforce."

ICYMI: New Dems Probe Department of Homeland Security on Lax ICE and CBP Training
Feb. 18, 2026

“Although Acting Director Lyons has said that he has not lowered the training threshold for ICE agents, there is substantial evidence that contradicts this claim. Specifically, it has been reported that the training for ICE agents was significantly reduced... Other shortcuts have also been reported, including an error with ICE’s AI tool that incorrectly identified applications with previous law enforcement officer experience. As a result, around 200 new ICE agents were sent to field offices without proper training. In another incident, new hires showed up for training despite failing to complete the agency’s full vetting process.“

Omar, Jayapal, Raskin, Thompson Lead 156 Lawmakers in Demanding Accountability Following the Death of Minneapolis Woman by ICE Agents
Jan. 9, 2026

“This week, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer shot and killed Renee Good, an U.S. citizen in Minneapolis. We write to express our horror and outrage at the actions that have taken place under your command. This is not the first time your agents have used unnecessary force on civilians without provocation. You have lost the faith and confidence of the American people. We demand that you immediately suspend the current surge of federal officers and agents to Minneapolis and that you work with an independent agency to ensure transparency and accountability throughout the course of the investigation into this reprehensible event,” the Members wrote.

Ocasio-Cortez, Espaillat, Goldman Lead Letter Demanding Transparency on ICE Detention of School-Aged Children
Oct. 6, 2025

“In New York City, school communities have been shaken by the arrest and deportation of school children as young as six years old. ICE’s targeting of not only adults without criminal convictions, but also children and families, negates the administration’s stated policy of going after the ‘worst of the worst’ for deportation proceedings,” the lawmakers wrote. “All students in the United States are entitled to equal access to education, regardless of their immigration status, race or nationality, or the language they speak…We demand transparency on how the Department of Education is fulfilling its obligations to students in ICE detention, as well as how it is looking after the mental health impact of student arrests and detentions to the broader school community, including to the U.S. citizen classmates of detained students.”

Rep. Dan Goldman Demands Transparency Around Immigration Proceedings for Unaccompanied Minors
June 23, 2025

"Congressman Dan Goldman (NY-10) led 77 of his colleagues in sending a bipartisan letter to the House Appropriations Subcommittee to direct the Department of Justice’s Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR) to submit a report to Congress detailing the status of unaccompanied children’s immigration proceedings. The letter also asks the Committee to include language in its FY2026 report encouraging EOIR to continue using specialized juvenile dockets to improve fairness, efficiency, and child protection in immigration court proceedings.

“The immigration courts have a critical role to play in administering justice efficiently while maintaining standards that ensure due process, which can be especially difficult in proceedings where children are the sole or principal respondent.  Utilization of specialized juvenile dockets with robust anti-trafficking safeguards and child-appropriate accommodations can both help protect children from dangers and achieve much needed efficiency benefits for the backlogged immigration courts, all while improving due process in children’s cases,” the Members wrote."

Cortez Masto, Colleagues Press Administration for Answers on Cancellation of Protected Status for Afghans Living in U.S.
June 4, 2025

“We write with deep concern about the Department of Homeland Security’s termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Afghanistan, which is scheduled to take effect on July 14, 2025. This decision is devastating for resettled Afghan nationals in the United States who have fled widespread violence, economic instability, challenging humanitarian conditions, and human rights abuses in their home country. Many of these Afghans fearlessly served as strong allies to the United States military during the war in Afghanistan, and we cannot blatantly disregard their service,” the lawmakers began.

The Members wrote that, “people detained at Krome have faced alarming conditions, including prolonged confinement in unsanitary environments, lack of medical care, overcrowding, and mistreatment by staff. At least three deaths have occurred in ICE custody and several detained men and women and their families have alleged serious abuses. Padilla, Schiff Urge Attorney General Bondi to Reverse Course on Unjustified Firings of Immigration Judges
March 31, 2025

"U.S. Senators Alex Padilla (D-Calif.), Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Immigration Subcommittee, and Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) joined 64 House and Senate Democrats in urging Attorney General Pam Bondi to reverse the Executive Office for Immigration Review’s (EOIR) alarming decision to fire immigration judges even as the immigration courts currently face a staggering backlog of immigration cases. In February, EOIR abruptly fired 20 immigration judges, removed all nine Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA) judges appointed during the Biden Administration, and terminated four individuals in senior EOIR leadership positions, with indications they may remove even more judges."
