Merkley, Wasserman Schultz Lead 65 Lawmakers to Press Trump Admin on Plans for Dangerous, Cruel ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ Facility
Aug. 20, 2025

“Brushing aside concerns from human rights watchdogs, environmentalist groups, and Tribal nations, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has greenlit the construction of this expansive detention facility that may violate detained individuals’ human rights, jeopardize public and environmental health, and violate federal law. We ask that DHS promptly provide critical information for the American public to better understand this detention plan,” wrote the lawmakers to DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, ICE Acting Director Todd Lyons, FEMA Acting Administrator David Richardson, and DHS Inspector General Joseph Cuffari."

Brownley, Chu Lead Call for Oversight and Accountability for Mistreatment of Individuals with Disabilities in ICE Custody
Aug. 5, 2025

“Reports of ICE and its contractors failing to provide necessary accommodations, neglecting medical needs, and violating disability rights laws are deeply alarming,” wrote the lawmakers. “It is unacceptable that detainees with disabilities are routinely denied access to medications, assistive devices, and means of communication until emergencies arise. This pattern of neglect demands immediate federal oversight, accountability, and enforcement of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and DHS’s own regulations.”

Cortez Masto, Colleagues Press Administration for Answers on Cancellation of Protected Status for Afghans Living in U.S.
June 4, 2025

“We write with deep concern about the Department of Homeland Security’s termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Afghanistan, which is scheduled to take effect on July 14, 2025. This decision is devastating for resettled Afghan nationals in the United States who have fled widespread violence, economic instability, challenging humanitarian conditions, and human rights abuses in their home country. Many of these Afghans fearlessly served as strong allies to the United States military during the war in Afghanistan, and we cannot blatantly disregard their service,” the lawmakers began.

Congressman Glenn Ivey Leads House Colleagues in Demanding Return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia
April 21, 2025

Today, Congressman Glenn Ivey (MD-04) sent a letter to President Donald Trump demanding the immediate return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who was wrongfully deported to El Salvador, to the United States, despite having been granted protection from deportation by a United States immigration court. Despite the Trump Administration admitting Mr. Abrego Garcia’s removal was a mistake and the Supreme Court ordering the facilitation of his return, the Trump Administration has indicated repeatedly it does not intend to comply with the Supreme Court’s order and bring Mr. Abrego Garcia back to the United States. Mr. Abrego Garcia is a Maryland resident, living in Maryland’s Fourth Congressional District with his U.S. citizen wife and family.
