“Although Acting Director Lyons has said that he has not lowered the training threshold for ICE agents, there is substantial evidence that contradicts this claim. Specifically, it has been reported that the training for ICE agents was significantly reduced... Other shortcuts have also been reported, including an error with ICE’s AI tool that incorrectly identified applications with previous law enforcement officer experience. As a result, around 200 new ICE agents were sent to field offices without proper training. In another incident, new hires showed up for training despite failing to complete the agency’s full vetting process.“

"As the Trump Administration continues to weaponize ICE and stoke fear in our communities, we have to be united across government – local, state, and federal government – to protect the safety and dignity of our neighbors. When ICE sends under-trained agents – who spend roughly ⅓ the amount of time training than our own local law enforcement – when they send those undertrained agents into our communities with guns and masks and no respect for due process, the public trust is eroded. When two U.S. citizens, Alex Pretti and Renee Good, are brutally murdered on camera, ICE is not making our communities any safer. And in 2025  – I know you know this, but I have to say it for the record – it was the deadliest year on record for those who were detained in ICE facilities. 25 people died in ICE facilities while in custody. “All our lives, we are taught to fear masked men in unmarked vehicles. We learn we should run from such men to avoid being kidnapped, sexually assaulted, or killed. Yet, ICE is increasingly conducting raids and arrests in masks, plain-clothes, without visible identification or badges, using unmarked vehicles – tactics that cause confusion, terror, and mistrust among the public. These tactics invited perpetrators of violence against women to take advantage of the chaos by impersonating masked ICE agents in order to target and sexually assault women,” the members wrote.

“Reports of ICE and its contractors failing to provide necessary accommodations, neglecting medical needs, and violating disability rights laws are deeply alarming,” wrote the lawmakers. “It is unacceptable that detainees with disabilities are routinely denied access to medications, assistive devices, and means of communication until emergencies arise. This pattern of neglect demands immediate federal oversight, accountability, and enforcement of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and DHS’s own regulations.”

“We write with deep concern about the Department of Homeland Security’s termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Afghanistan, which is scheduled to take effect on July 14, 2025. Today, Congressman Glenn Ivey (MD-04) sent a letter to President Donald Trump demanding the immediate return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who was wrongfully deported to El Salvador, to the United States, despite having been granted protection from deportation by a United States immigration court. Despite the Trump Administration admitting Mr. Abrego Garcia’s removal was a mistake and the Supreme Court ordering the facilitation of his return, the Trump Administration has indicated repeatedly it does not intend to comply with the Supreme Court’s order and bring Mr. Abrego Garcia back to the United States. Mr. Abrego Garcia is a Maryland resident, living in Maryland’s Fourth Congressional District with his U.S. citizen wife and family.

“Yesterday, the Trump Administration admitted that it abducted and unlawfully deported Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, a Marylander, the husband of a U.S. citizen, and the father of a U.S. citizen child with disabilities. He had just picked up his son, who has autism, when Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detained him. The Trump Administration sent him to a notorious mega-prison in El Salvador without a hearing or any semblance of due process. The Administration has produced no viable evidence that he was a member of any gang and admitted his detention and removal were an ‘error.’
