Dear Chairman Jordan and Chairman McClintock,

The Immigration Accountability Project is pleased to support H.R. 9773, the Permanent Trump Secure Border Act. 

We watched with horror as President Biden used loopholes in our immigration laws, including parole and asylum, to usher millions of illegal and inadmissible aliens into our nation. We championed H.R. 2, the Secure the Border Act, last Congress as it made its way through your Committee and to the House floor. We celebrated its passage by the House with you in May 2023. Unfortunately, we all knew that then-Majority Leader Schumer would leave H.R. 2 to die on his desk.

Americans cheered when, immediately upon taking office, President Trump secured the border, ended catch-and-release and the abuse of parole, and turned away fraudulent asylum seekers. However, until Congress closes the loopholes in the law, the Sword of Damocles is hanging over our heads, waiting until the left retakes power and reopens our borders.

The American people should never again face an immigration crisis intentionally inflicted by an administration that is hostile to our immigration laws. Congress has plenary power over immigration and an obligation to address the loopholes that were exploited. The Permanent Trump Secure Border Act, like its predecessor the Secure Border Act, would lock down our border for future generations. 

H.R. 9773 would permanently end catch-and-release so illegal border crossers are not allowed to enter and remain in our country. It would stop abuse of humanitarian parole by strictly defining when, how, and for how long it may be granted. It would significantly reduce asylum fraud by implementing a “safe third country” policy and mandatory detention of asylum seekers while their proceedings are pending. When an illegal alien enters the United States, the Department of Homeland Security will be left with three options: detain, return, or remove. Importantly, H.R. 9773 would amend the TVPRA to end the incentives for the trafficking of unaccompanied alien children.

We are disappointed that the Permanent Trump Secure Border Act does not include E-Verify, since it is the most effective way to prevent illegal aliens already here, including visa overstays, from being able to work and remain here. We look forward to working with you to pass nationwide mandatory E-Verify soon.
