IAP Joins Launch of Mass Deportation Coalition

The Immigration Accountability Project, along with several other immigration law and policy experts, former law enforcement officials, advocates, and supporters, announced the launch of the Mass Deportation Coalition earlier this week. The Coalition's purpose is to develop a playbook that can be used by the Trump Administration to achieve more than 1 million deportations each year, helping to fulfill Pres. Trump's premier campaign promise.

The Coalition’s guiding principles focus on:

  • Expanding the Scope: Developing recommendations that go beyond simply removing the "worst of the worst."

  • A Whole-of-Government Approach: Mandating cooperation across federal agencies to identify and assist in the removal of illegal aliens.

  • Worksite Enforcement: Cracking down on the employment magnets that encourage illegal immigration.

DHS Shutdown Continues

The shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will enter its second week this weekend, and there doesn't seem to be an end in sight.

With Congress out of session this week for the President's Day recess, there was little movement in negotiations between the White House and Congressional Democrats. The two sides have exchanged proposals, but neither side has leaked what the other is willing to trade. Both sides will likely use Pres. Trump's State of the Union address next week to make their case to voters.

What is at stake? Democrats are demanding that a list of 10 provisions be added to the DHS funding bill. These provisions would place significant restrictions on immigration enforcement, effectively protecting nearly every illegal alien from deportation.

Who is impacted? The shutdown exclusively affects DHS, which includes Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Customs and Border Protection (CBP), FEMA, TSA, the Coast Guard, the Secret Service, and more. Because most of DHS's 260,000 employees are considered essential, they are continuing to work during the shutdown without pay to keep the country secure.

IAP's Director of Government Relations, Grant Newman, joined Mark Krikorian at the Center for Immigration Studies for its weekly podcast this week. Grant and Mark break down the Democrats' demands and Republican counteroffers.
