Homeland Security Improvement Act

This bill seeks to change how DHS, and specifically CBP, operates. Changes include-

  • Mandating new standards for conditions in short-term custody facilities.
  • Establishing an ombudsman for border and immigration enforcement-related concerns to provide a channel for complaints and oversight.
  • Requiring enhanced training for CBP officers on topics such as use-of-force, de-escalation techniques, cultural sensitivity, and the rights of individuals, including asylum seekers.
  • Increasing transparency by requiring more detailed reporting on enforcement actions, detentions, and deaths in custody.
