SAFER Transport Act
While this bill is largely focused on transportation and freight fraud, it has several provisions related to immigration policy. It would:
Require states issuing commercial driver's licenses (CDLs) to confirm the legal work authorization of applicants;
Align CDL expiration dates with the expiration dates of temporary work authorizations (where applicable);
Submit monthly reports on issuances of "foreign non-domiciled" CDLs to aliens;
Prohibit employers from knowingly transporting domestic cargo using an illegal alien, closing a loophole with independent contractors;
Require a memorandum of understanding between the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to communicate violations; and
Add "transportation, trafficking, or smuggling of persons" to covered felonies, which would allow the Secretary of Transportation to withhold or revoke registration.
